About Us

'Asha Ka Jharna' as a voluntary non-profit organization is recipient of “STATE BEST NGO AWARD 2009” by Rajasthan Government working for the cause of disability since 1997. It is providing comprehensive services to disadvantaged community at rural and semi-urban locations. Apart from special school set up, we have OPD services for physiotherapy; referral; home-based therapeutics & special education facilities etc.

Main aim of Asha Ka Jharna is to make lives of these less privileged children more meaningful and dignified by attaining their rightful place in the society.

Guiding force behind AKJ is Ms Reshma Agarwal who after completing Bachelor degree in Education from Boston, USA specialized in education of special needs children while doing Masters Course from Harvard University. As a part of final project submission idea of AKJ was conceptualized and developed by her during late 1997 which was nurtured by her father Mr P N Agarwal who encouraged and motivated her to put theory into practice and shape this project in his native land of Rajasthan.

In Nawalgarh more than 500 children across various disabilities and age groups were found and there was no facility for any intervention nearby. Hence it was decided to start a special school on the lines of project thesis with Reshma providing technical support, Mr Agarwal financial backing and Sudeep managerial & administration.

We started our services with eight special children (five children at school and three home - based). We encountered many difficulties in the initial phase of starting our activities.
  Training Program
1.Authorized study Centre of Indira Gandhi National Open University New Delhi for Foundation Course on Disability targeted at in –service- teachers under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.
2.Awareness cum Training Package on Disability (Mental Retardation) for parents in collaboration with Indira Gandhi Open University and Rehabilitation Council Of India.
3.IT Essentials and Hardware Course by CISCO Networking Academy.
  Activities and Awareness
To educate the common populace about the cause of disability more effectively Asha Ka Jharna has been conducting various awareness programmes. Last November, a massive campaign ‘Badhte Kadam’ was held at the school in Sikar, which saw children from both regular schools as well as AKJ’s special school participate in a ‘Disabled Rights Rally’.

Further, they took part in sports and cultural programmes to promote inclusion and enacted street plays that were aimed at creating awareness about early identification of children born with disabilities and the benefits of timely intervention.

Some others are as follows:
1.Regular ongoing special education, training and therapeutics services to 150 and 175 special needs children and their families every year.
2.Accessibility and Inclusion made possible to more than 1000 beneficiaries through disability certificates, assistive devices, aids & appliances, polio corrective surgeries.
3.Free distribution of high quality behind the ear hearing aids (each pair costing Rupees 25000/-) to 460 children across the surrounding region.
4.Community counseling services to more than 5000 persons.
5.Massive school/college awareness programmes on disability in the Shekhawati area. 40000 school students and teachers covered.
6.Formal Training courses in association with Indira Gandhi National Open University New Delhi delivered to 360 Govt teachers and 80 parents.
7.‘District Games for Disabled’ Conducted at Sikar under the scheme of Ministry of Sports & Youth Affairs (232 Special Needs Athletes participated)
8.‘Regional Parents Meet’ by NIMH & PARIVAAR organized at Jhunjhunu. (112 Parents from Rajasthan and Gujarat participated)
9.Community sensitization events at different places (2500 targeted)
10.Special needs children taken to Special Olympics, Abylmpics, excursions, adventure expeditions, fairs etc. to various places all over India.(>200 trips)
1.Three school buildings at Nawalgarh, Jhunjhunu and Sikar (Rented Premises) comprising seven classes each. There are one hundred and seventy three children [mentally challenged (86) and hearing impaired (87)] studying at all the schools. Apart from this we have about 25 acres of land at Village Nawladi (Nawalgarh) where a regular school is being developed.
2.Human resources: Thirty three personnel’s with professional qualifications as well as untrained one’s going through various on-the-job training and refresher programs throughout the country.
3.Well-equipped Physiotherapy and Speech Therapy Departments at all our three schools consisting of basic therapeutic equipment’s including group hearing systems, audiometer and speech trainers, traction, stimulator, diathermy.
4.Library with more than two thousand books on disability, special education, leisure reading for children and staff, govt. schemes etc. We have subscription of around ten regular newsletters/periodicals on these issues.
5.Well-equipped Computer rooms at all units with total thirteen computers (P-III processors), three printers, CD writer, one scanner, two UPS system, with educational CD’S and floppies.
6.Audio-Visual facilities comprising of three colour T.V., CD and DVD music players, Multi Media Projector, Cameras etc.
